Broadway Report

The majestic sweep of Broadway, taking in rows of commercial storefronts stretching into the distance as you descend the hill from Robinson Ave, culminating in an unparalleled Hudson Highlands vista, is like no other view in the Hudson Valley, or perhaps anywhere. Leafing through Pat Favata’s book, Newburgh: The Heart of the City, it becomes apparent that not that long ago, Broadway’s storefronts were all active establishments of many kinds .

The Broadway Report is meant to take a cross section of who are the businesses who anchored on Broadway and what are the issues and opportunities that face them. This preliminary report is a conversation starter: it is meant to inform and galvanize local officials, city staff, property owners, merchants, residents and other stakeholders to work together and invest in a collective vision for Broadway. At its core, the report outlines the most urgent problems that need to be addressed to better support Broadway stakeholders. Newburgh’s grand boulevard has the opportunity to meet the needs and demands of locals, entice regional visitors, and become the vibrant commercial corridor, once again.

Share your thoughts on the report? Got any ideas? Share them with us.

Trees for Newburgh

  • 123 Grand Street Newburgh United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

A healthy urban tree canopy offers a lot of benefits to the city and its residents. Benefits range from storm water management to cooling urban heat island effect and even improved mental health and increased property values, to name a few.

Considering that Newburgh is the home of landscape architecture, please donate to support a tree initiative for historic Newburgh. In celebration of the newly formed Greater Newburgh Parks Conservancy, I want to increase the tree canopy by 100 trees for a healthier and more beautiful city. We incorporate community outreach and programming to our efforts so to build community stewardship of the newly planted trees.

Every little bit will help me reach my goal. $2, $10, $25, $50, $100... My first FB birthday fundraiser. Let’s make it a success 💫

On Saturday May 11, 2019, Yale alumni and community members will convene to envision a better welcoming pedestrian, stroller, and bicyclist corridor on Lake Street Corridor. Currently the intersection is a dangerous car-dominant area with four traffic lanes and faded crosswalks, creating a barrier for thousands of city residents to access a beloved park. Two projects will be explored with community members: 1) right-size Lake Street Corridor and suggest tactical interventions to calm traffic and  2) propose wayfinding (signage) and green planting to connect the broken emerald necklace with the area’s natural assets (Crystal Lake, Quassaick Creek, Muchattoes Lake and Delano-Hitch Park) .

Park(ing) Day

PARK(ing) Day is an annual event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. Come hang out with us! Join us in Newburgh as we create public spaces for all to share.

Locations:
Newburgh Restoration & DoSI- Broadway & Clark Street
Panja - 15 Liberty Street
Blacc Vanilla - 197 South Street

The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!

The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, and since evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world.

Providing temporary public open space . . . one parking spot at at time.
